Continuous Avalanche Segregation of Granular Mixtures in Thin Rotating Drums
نویسنده
چکیده
We study segregation of granular mixtures in the continuous avalanche regime (for frequencies above 1 rpm) in thin rotating drums using a continuum theory for surface flows of grains. The theory predicts profiles in agreement with experiments only when we consider a flux-dependent velocity of flowing grains. We find the segregation of species of different size and surface properties, with the smallest and roughest grains being found at the center of the drum. For a wide difference between the species we find a complete segregation in agreement with experiments. In addition, we predict a transition to a smooth segregation regime as the size ratio between the grains is decreased towards one.

Size segregation and convection of granular mixtures almost completely packed in a thin rotating Box
We simulate size segregation in granular mixtures which are almost completely packed in a rotating drum. Instead of a 3D drum, we simulate a 2D thin rotating box which is almost completely packed with granular mixtures. The phase inversion of a radially segregated pattern which was found in a 3D experiment is qualitatively reproduced with this simulation. A global convection appears after a rad...

In many industrial processes granular materials are mixed together in partially filled slowly rotating drums. In this paper a general theoretical framework is developed for the quasi-two-dimensional motion of granular material in a rotating drum. The key assumption is that the body can be divided into a fluid-like and a solid-like region, that are separated by a non-material singular surface at...
متن کاملAnalysis of radial segregation of granular mixtures in a rotating drum
This paper considers the segregation of a granular mixture in a rotating drum. Extending a recent kinematic model for grain transport on sandpile surfaces to the case of rotating drums, an analysis is presented for radial segregation in the rolling regime, where a thin layer is avalanching down while the rest of the material follows rigid body rotation. We argue that segregation is driven not j...

متن کاملFilling a silo with a mixture of grains: Friction-induced segregation
– We study the filling process of a two-dimensional silo with inelastic particles by simulation of a granular-media lattice gas (GMLG) model. We calculate the surface shape and flow profiles for a monodisperse system and we introduce a novel generalization of the GMLG model for a binary mixture of particles of different friction properties where, for the first time, we measure the segregation p...
